A Single Unifying Theory
Small Arms Dealer

Reviewed by: John-Michael Bond [Mon, January 30, 2006 @ 8:45:13 PM]

When you are depressed certain types of music will simply not do. I think the modern glut of shitty screamo and fashion core bands is due to too much bad music at the wrong time. These kids get depressed and find a From First to Last album and it’s over. Well I say we put a stop to that shit right now. This is the day we introduce the kids to some real music for bad moods. The good shit the bad mood craves like more cowbell. Bands like Lifetime and Jawbreaker and Lou Reed. Bands like Small Arms Dealer.

Melodic and angry. Sarcastic and bitter but with the sense of humor that draws the line between the “as my heart weeps from your lost love” lyrics and lines like “if the shoe fits, they say wear it, I say fuck them, I say fuck this, I've got two hands, make that two fists, you won't like me when I'm like this, I could really care less about that I say what i say... I say what I want.” Which would you rather be singing along to in your car on the way home from work?

Musically Small Arms Dealer brings to mind the love child of Dillinger Four, Lifetime and Lou Reed. For every punk rager there are equal moments of pure balls out rock and roll. You can imagine the pain that inspired these guys but from the way they sing about it you almost believe those at fault really are six feet deep. Dwelling on the negativity of the lyrics and tone of the record will seem like a negative for a lot of people. I’m not one of those people. Music is supposed to stir emotions in you and help you through things. A Single Unifying Theory is exactly what the doctor ordered for those cold and lonely days. Remember; nothing says healing like a healthy “fuck you.”
